A Murder in Hollywood by Michael Crichton Book Review

3/5 ⭐

A Murder in Hollywood is an interesting look at an earlier side of Michael Crichton’s work. Originally written in the early 1970s and only recently published, this Hollywood murder mystery feels very different from the Michael Crichton most readers know.

The story follows a movie production thrown into chaos after the screenwriter of an upcoming Western is found dead. I really enjoyed the glimpse into 1970s Hollywood and all the behind-the-scenes drama, but I actually found myself more interested in that than the mystery itself. I found the mystery fairly easy to predict and there were stretches where I kept waiting for the story to pick up.

Ironically, a book about movie-making left me thinking it would work better as a movie. Overall, it wasn't a bad read, but it didn't completely grab me and probably isn't the best representation of Crichton's work.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Ray Porter, who did a great job bringing the characters and the 1970s atmosphere to life.

While this wasn't a standout read for me, I'm still glad I gave it a chance. If you're a Michael Crichton fan or enjoy classic mysteries and old Hollywood settings, you may appreciate seeing an earlier side of his writing.
